My physics teacher tried to teach me physics for the most part. Tried and failed. For learning English, I found my English teacher most useful really. Strange but true.

And my reply wasn’t the most considerate either, I know but OP’s writing illustrates nicely why teachers could deserve some respect. Unless of course they’re total dickheads.
Considering that OP’s teachers apparently beat their students (or at least stand idly by while their colleagues do), I’d argue that they do not deserve one ounce of respect.
