It’s brought me joy in life and I’ve learned so many new things. How cool is it that we get to enjoy all of this cool stuff for free (as in cost) and free (as in freedom)?

That is all. Hope everyone has a nice day.

It’s not really free: Consider donating money to your instance in order to pay the server costs!

We are building something nice here. ;) It’s very welcoming. For most of my online life I’ve been just a lurker, here I feel like my presence needs to add something of value, even if small.

It is a bit of a utopia for a privacy minded Linux fan. Most social media I’ve had to find my community. Here it is THE community. It would take an effort to avoid it.

And you have a nice day too.

Try different sorting algorithms too (like scaled)
Also try different Fedi Software too like Peertube
If you take the time to do that you have a rabbithole to loose yourself in easily

Thanks! I’ve seen that there’s a lot. Just haven’t gotten to it all yet. Peertube especially seems worthwhile, I should get the app and check it out on a break at work or something.

Just don’t try to debate politics unless you already subscribe to the prevailing groupthink. In fairness, that’s true of any social-media forum, and the corporate ones have other problems on top.

Try expressing a centrist or - heaven forbid (I haven’t actually tried this one) moderate conservative - position on a hot-button subject and see if you still feel that way.

I have, no one gives a shit, actually why I instantly liked lemmy over reddit, I got banned from multiple subs there for saying I dislike our reliance/pushing for more h1vb visas when recent college grads here cant get jobs, super controversial on reddit got me a 7 day ban, here some ppl agree

Perhaps it depends on community but my experience has been pretty uniform: brigading, comment removal, bans, for expressing ideas that (according to opinion polls) are shared by literally most of the population. At first I was a bit shocked, now I know just to avoid politics, it’s not worth the trouble. If you’ve had a difference experience then good for you.

much easier to treat workers shittier if they can be replaced by h1b workers who can be treated even worse since they have to rush to find a job if fired to not get deported, and the ones that do stay are sending money back home, that money is not making its way back in the economy, also being indian what I hear from them in their “private” communities in hindi is that they hate western views and have no intention of staying here (which I guess conservatives would love, but there are so many ppl that genuinely want to be here and cant, I hate seeing that sht)

Fortunately “groupthink” on the fediverse isn’t a structural problem since nobody controls all instances and every instance has different moderation styles.

You can view and post in channels on other instances from your home instance without switching. For example, I’m commenting from piefed.social

Depending on your method of access (like app or webpage) often there is a way to browse without an account. Though you won’t be able to comment, vote, or save anything (like settings). So really, to sign up on a new instance, you pretty much need an account to do all this - otherwise abusers would send so much spam everywhere, this is why accounts are mandatory.

Although once you have an account on one instance, you automatically get to see content from all of them. Make sure you are looking at “All” rather than just “Local” content.

When you are ready to switch, go to account settings, scroll to the bottom and choose Export, then in the new place choose Import and it will port over all your subscriptions, block lists, etc.
