omg, the rich kid letting you watch…ugh, been there. that kid at my school had the nicest skate board you could buy and never once road it. Meanwhile we were mowing lawns to buy plywood for ramps, smoking weed, and chasing girls. I wouldn’t have traded his isolated life for mine, but I doubt he ended up going through the tough times me and my friends did. Tough times don’t build character, IMO, they just increase resentment towards the system.
the culture of the wealth gap (or intentional moat) has always been there, embedded in our everyday lives from birth to death. Temporarily embarrassed millionaires indeed.
There was this new kid at (public) middle school we kinda started feeling sorry for. He was always dressed nice. Had an excuse for PE. Had a special lunch from the cafeteria because of dietary needs. Turns out his parents were super specialized doctors or surgeons or something. After a couple of months he said he could have one of person over at a time after school. I went over first on my skateboard. He had one that he didn’t know how to ride, so he walked. We get to his house and they have this amazing view of the water and mountains. A fucking indoor pool and jacuzzi. Green house in the middle of the entryway with tropical plants. The mom greeted us and makes us leave our skateboards outside, take off our shoes, and told us the house rules. She asked me what my parents did and was just kind of deadeyes when I told her (boring, middle class work). We went to his room that had a goddamn computer in, most households didn’t have anything like that at the time. He had his own private phone line, cable tv, and tons of plastic model cars and planes. He had an RC Car. I was blown away and then he shows me their entertainment room with a giant projector tv, air hockey, a film projector and screen, and a bunch of other shit I can’t remember. I feel like I spent about an hour there before the mom found us and sent me home because they were having dinner? Gee thanks lady, I guess you don’t want the poors coming back for free food. Or your son to have any friends. My other friends went over there (one at a time!) with the same results. Looking back, I guess his parents were trying to research what other kid’s parents might be wealthy enough for their son to hang out with. or maybe for them to entertain/socialize. It was pretty gross.
We moved into a place that had a massive washing machine in a room attached to the garage. We ended up buying a massive dryer to match. It’s like having our own laundrette. And since I do my laundry like an animal (no separation, no gentle cycle, now low heat dry) I can get most of my clothes done in two loads.
Toyota Tacoma. Is literally worth more now than when I bought it. My model has bluetooth but none of the “always on tracking” many vehicles come with after. Subaru Forester. It had a recall for a head gasket something or other that required an entire new engine. Got that done at 115k miles, basically a new car for nothing.
Le Crueset set for about $600 15 years ago. We have cooked hundreds of meals with them. Same with cast iron and stainless copper core pots and pans. Immersion blender (corded) as well. Stove top espresso percolator is so cheap and nice if you aren’t a daily espresso drinker. Having that one cup on a rainy afternoon or after dinner is a treat.
If you like grilled/bbq/smoked food, a nice grill will last years if you take care of it. I had a side by side gas and charcoal/wood grill for the last 11 years. Heavy use and lack of replacement parts finally killed it. I could cook full plates for 20+ people off that thing or just a couple of chicken breasts for a quick dinner. I have a pretty cheap but capable gas stainless grill and a santa maria bbq now. They work fine, but not quite as convenient as the all in one.
A really good mattress, solid bed frame, nice pillows, and high thread count cotton sheets are worth every penny. I didn’t get all that together until I was middle aged and I really wished I had done it sooner. My back is like “wtf dude, we could have had this the whole time ?!”
If you do any woodworking, 3d printing, making stuff, art etc? Space. A space to do all that it. Wether it is a hobby or cottage industry, you will need dedicated space to make your mess. I’ve seen people trying to DIY in apartments on youtube and its just so bad. Not to mention dangerous. Fumes, fire, trip hazard, mdf dust, etc. Find a place to house all that nonsense outside of your living space.
And if you make digital art, photoshop, draw, anything that makes you hate a mouse for input. A Wacom tablet screen is worth it. Not an iPad, not a Surface all in one, not some knock off clone from Ali Express…but a crazy expensive Wacom. The regular tablets are okay, but drawing on the screen is almost impossible to come back from. I bought mine in 2009 for $3k and still use it daily.
I had a friend who managed a huge building of both private owned and rentals. it was trip what people did on their way out. some nightmare scenarios. and some people would give him things like a kitchaid mixer or old stereos or furniture etc. the evictions and occasional death were the hardest on him. he lasted about 7 years before the management company changed hands and started messing with his deal.
I know how to do this.
take relish (sweet or dill) and blend smooth. add pickle juice until runny. blend again. put about a 1/4 cup into an empty Soda Stream and pump it up like triple the normal amount. quickly cap and shake the hell out of it. uncap and suck the vapor out with a straw.

Obviously there was nothing like Jimmy Hendrix either, but there was so much new and experimental music at the time he unfortunately gets lumped into “60’s music” IMO.

Who would buy a $200 chair every two years(!?). There are so many other breathable mesh chairs out there that have more articulation/adjustment. and aren’t $850-1300. Aeron’s just aren’t comfortable after 3-4 hours let alone a marathon work day. They are designed to keep you upright and facing a monitor, not for comfort. I think they get away with it because they have become a corporate status symbol. Especially new production offices/agencies/startups love to populate their workspaces with aerons or mira (another terrible chair). Like the eames lounge chair: Gorgeous and futurist to look at, but nigh impractical and uncomfortable.
Aeron chairs are grossly overrated. They have been clever in both making a durable kind of chair and marketing like Apple. They aren’t that comfortable and are designed to keep you “upright” but not much else. Originally there wasn’t much like the Aeron, but now you have many, many choices for a much better price and comfort. It’s personal taste, but I prefer a chair with a headrest. Also, your desk is equally as important for long sessions. Size, leg room, height etc. I built my own custom workstation to suit my needs. I ended up using a cheap Corsair gaming chair and my neck and mouse shoulder has never been happier.
Me. I’m the guy. I freelanced a lot for a few years. Mostly part time multi-week/month gigs. Every new company that brought me in had a guy already there with my first name. Not a rare name, but not a common name either. Within two weeks of my start dates, those people would be fired. It happened three jobs in a row.
Filming on film and showing in the theater is wildly outdated and unecessary. At the same time we have reached so much bloat in digital content that even the act of sorting what is worth watching takes a lifetime and feels disappointing. It also feels like a guantlet to find anything for a rewatch to the point I give up and just do other things like write tepid takes on lemmy.
In the US there are some things covered in the survey and some not. We paid for an independent home inspector to go top to bottom of ours before purchase. I tested the water, had the most recent electrician go over our system, and talked to the neighbors about the history of the property. It was very good to have all that information and worth the money to pay for. It greatly reduced the worry and I got to know the property before buying it.
I got pretty severe shoulder and neck issues from sitting in Aeron and Mira chairs doing production graphics. Lots of pointing and clicking. I found an old gaming chair in a storage closet and haven’t had the same issues at all. Never looked back. Ergonomics should include what kind of work, duration, repetitive stress, monitor size, height, distance, body type etc.
