  • One central server is created. Users finally have an easy time joining lemmy and most are content with staying right where they are. A large amount of content is now centralized to one place. Suddenly, financial interests take notice of a large amount of untapped potential. Caving in to the opportunity to live an easier life under the warm blanket of money, the central server owner sells the server to the highest bidder.

The new central server owner defederates from smaller instances, eventually cutting themselves off from all other lemmy servers. Enshittification begins.

I’m sure there’s reasons this couldn’t happen but I think the biggest strength of lemmy is having users just randomly pick and then figure it out later. I started out on .world but didn’t like their moderation and defederation practices, so I moved.

  • Windows 11 seems to be fine, despite everyone whining constantly.

The ads everyone cries about? Can be disabled with a single option.

    Slowness? Haven’t experienced it.

11 didn’t introduce anything, for me, that I couldn’t already do. Some of the desktop management features aren’t that bad and the UI is fine I guess. If you don’t like it, turns out it’s pretty easy to replace with a different shell.

Privacy concerns are pretty legitimate, but with about as much effort as getting a Linux distro set up and working you can lock that stuff down.

  • I’m absolutely in favor of reducing single use plastics, but there’s so much plastic in so many things that I can’t imagine existing without it. People are rather unreasonably of the “plastic bad” mindset without considering what the alternatives could be.

Not everything can be glass or wood/wood-like substances. Metal has its own environmental concerns. What else is there?

  • All I’ve ever heard about microplastics is that everyone is filled with them and that they are everywhere.

What I haven’t heard is why that is a concern. Is it going to affect my health in the long run? When? How much do I have to have consumed for it be an issue?

Even if we identify those issues, can it be removed? Will it make a difference?

For such a ‘everyone is now worried about this’ type problem, I never once heard why they’re concerned. I suppose I could look it up, but I’m surprised that all of the discussion is about the issue existing, but not why it’s an issue to begin with.

My only issue with Voyager is how many things are interacted with my swiping. I accidentally up/downvote posts all the time. I also have a problem where I accidentally go back by swiping from the left frequently, causing me to lose my place in the feed or having to reopen the post I was scrolling through.

I don’t need to swipe for any of these functions when I have a back button and could just press a button on screen.
