In the tech world, some companies want you to do a take home project. They say things like, this will only take an hour, yet it normally takes like 4+ hours for most people. Anyway, I finally got one interview like this and I will not work for a company that pulls this crap.

I decided to go through with it and just post it online for anyone to see. I did the project, sent them the GitHub URL and did everything exactly as they asked. They responded with, can you make that a private repo and give the people permissions that need it. I told them I would rather keep it public and that I won’t be doing that. I never signed an NDA, so there was no way for them to force me to take it down.

Fuck all these places that do this type of shit.

Ignore them. If you can, should you try and stagger the time off with your s/o. Don’t take it at the same time.

Don’t do a blue white collar job. Go into a trade school and do that instead. Drive a truck, be an electrician, plumber, whatever. These are still good jobs and you actually might be happier doing something like this when compared to working in an office. At least you feel like you are doing something and you can see what you accomplish right away.

I’m much older than you and have been working in an office since I can remember. I have been really thinking about doing or at least learning a trade even though that would mean a huge pay cut for me.

If you don’t want to use a hosted provider, you can at least just start using git. Just do git init. Then you can start commiting changes. This way, you at least have a history of changes. Then just back that folder up like normal

Now you need a way to back it up. Probably the best way is to tar it up first and then dump that file. You can also get something like deadmans snitch to ensure backups don’t break.

As you mentioned, if this is just source code, then the best thing would be to create source control and have it set up that way. Then you automate it and deploy the code when you make updates and have a history of changes.

It sounds like tarsnap is your best bet though. It will be the cheapest.

You can also backup to another storage provider like Google, Dropbox, or even AWS s3. S3 can get costly, but you can archive everything to the glacier tier which is pretty cheap.
