@peereboominc@lemm.eeto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Is it just me, or is the whole world in a bad mood?English2•2MI feel the same but if I look back, there are just as much problems as now. I think that is because the ‘now’ is always more intense than the past events. Just think about it, do you remember every sad day or fight that you had in the past? Hopefully not but you do remember it if it was in the last 7 days.
Some problems from the past are: The crime peak of the 90s. New York City had 2245 murders in 1990. Since 2012 it has not been over 500 per year.
Or take Gaza and Isreal. That region has been a war zone since forever but peaked in 2023,2024.
Or Ukraine. That has only been independent since 1991. Tension in eastern Europe is not new. What is new is that it has been stable for the last 30 years.
Fascism, wars, corruption, etc will come and go and will continue to do so.
@peereboominc@lemm.eeto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•For US folks, is right now a good time to buy a house?English2•3MI have no idea about the situation in the US but normally prices will always go up because inflation. Sometimes the price will flatline or go down for a bit because of lower interest rate on a loan but the also more people want to buy. More buyers == higher prices.
Some time ago I heard a story about a couple buying a house in the 80s in a big city for an extreme high price. Now that house is worth 20x more than it used to be.
But then again, I have no idea about the situation in your country. In my country even the cheapest houses are made to last at least 80 years.
@peereboominc@lemm.eeto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Feeling lost and with no direction, what skill should I learn?English4•10MMaybe woodworking? It can get dusty and you need some room but you can also make smaller things that don’t need big power tools or a lot of room. Like miniature things.
Or computer programming. Create an app. Or do something fun like follow one of the coding challenges from the YouTube channel The Coding Train
@peereboominc@lemm.eeto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How can we reconcile the idea that Eugenics in Humans is bad, but in Dogs it's acceptable (given the 150 years of breeds with specific characteristics)?English11•1YI think it is because a dog has been seen as an object or tool for a long time. We are the owner. We buy the one that we like the most.
With humans we don’t have ownership over another human. The human is owned by itself. So we let everyone decide for themselves who the want to breed with. One person will select a partner that is nice, some like a “bad boy”, some like dark hair, blond, tall short, etc.
Also, humans are really not that different from each other while dogs can look like a completely different species.
I’m using a simple cheap usb switcher (Aten 2 x 4 USB 2.0 Switch). I have connected a mouse, keyboard, card reader. One machine is connect to the monitor via hdmi and the other via display port. I simply switch video via the buttons on the monitor. The third machine is a laptop that is not connected to the monitor.
A dedicated KVM would be a better option but I’m not willing to spend that much money.
I personally think that everything has always gone to shit. But in the downfall, new things will take over until that goes to shit. Or maybe because there are new things the old things will go down.
Take the example of video stores. They used the be the best thing ever. Rent all the movies you would like to see for a small fee per movie. Then downloading and streaming came along. Streaming was cheaper and more convenient. Result: video renting business went to shit.
Then the streaming services started to raise their prices. It started going to shit. Soon new ideas/companies/services will swoop in and the cycle will repeat again.
Don’t sell is my advice. Maybe it will take some time but the market will recover one day. The next peak will be bigger than the last, and the next and the next. If you zoom out you will see a steady line up. So sit down, and stop checking your account.
