Well, my response wasn’t directed at the original question but rather your comment on it. What I’m trying to say here, is that even if there is a God with a well-defined set of absolute moral principles, if He chooses not to disclose them to us clearly, it then shouldn’t be a source of concern either. Trying to figure out something that can’t be known is a fool’s errand. Instead, we should rather focus on finding out what constitutes a good life from our human perspective and strive to live accordingly. If, in the end, it turns out that actions like a gay marriage lead to condemnation, then it frankly just raises questions about the fairness of a God who hasn’t been more clear about such important matters.
It’s a bad analogy, but my argument isn’t against our search of greater morality. Rather, it’s about the relevance of God in that pursuit. Morality is a challenge that we, as humans, must figure out by ourselves. Even if there exists an all-knowing God with a specific set of moral rules in mind, if we cannot know/understand them, and God chooses not to reveal them, then, by definition, those rules are inaccessible to us. In such a scenario, morality as defined by God becomes irrelevant to our human experience. Instead, we should rely on reason, science, and evidence-based research to find what behaviour promotes the thriving of our species.
I wonder that about quite many things. I feel like I’m not in the target audience for almost anything new.
I mean there’s not even anything particularly wrong about that stuff. It’s just that I only have so many hours in a day, and there’s plenty interesting content out there for my niche interests, so I don’t want to spend it watching some braind numbing entertainment that’s mostly directed at the “masses”
Smart is a weird word and I don’t know if I would describe me as that.
I rather consider myself as rational/intellectual. I might not know a lot of things, but I feel like the way I think is somewhat uncommon when compared to the general population. Emotions don’t cloud my judgement as much, and I seem to have this ability to take few steps back and observe things from afar. Because of this I’m a really mixed bag when it comes to my views on current affairs, and by knowing my stance on few issues doesn’t really help you to figure out what I think about the rest. I can usually also be honest to myself about facts even when it’s inconvenient for me.
I’m the kind of person who you ask a simple question from, and you get a lecture in return, because I’m physically unable to give overly simplified answers to complex, nuanced questions which is basically all of them.
One of my favourite things about reddit was that I could sort by controversial, and would often find a reasonable take explaining the view of the opposing side. Even when I don’t agree with it, I still want to hear it, and what I often found the case to be is that I didn’t quite agree with either sides and (unsurprisingly) the thruth is somewhere on the middle.
On Lemmy this often is not the case and I pretty much only hear one side of the argument and not many bothers to write a reasonable take arguing against the apparent view of the masses because it’ll just receive downvotes and bad faith counter-arguments. The extreme left is just as unreasonable as the extreme right and it’s often the majority in the middle who simply stays silent. There seems to be almost no space for nuance and complexity.
I’ve blocked 130 users so far and usually add few people to that list every day.
Even on a small place like Lemmy there’s still way more content than I can pay attention to. If I see someone posting stupid shit and I go see their profile and discover that’s the only kind of content they post then by blocking them I just increase the signal to noise ratio on my feed. Quality over quantity.
However I try to stick to my principles when blocking. One “fuck this person” -message doesn’t get you blocked unless by a quick glance I can find several of them in your history.
Also my instance has defederated like 20 instances so that alone probably adds 500 users to that list.
My upvote to downvote ratio is probably 1:3. I downvote mostly short messages that don’t bring any value into the discussion. These are usually “fuck this guy” and “fuck this system” etc. Then again I sometimes upvote comments I disagree with only because they’re atleast putting some effort into it and are not afraid to bring up an alternative view point or something. Basically I’m using the voting to indicate what kind of messages I want more and what I want less.
I actually lied for the first time in about 3 years just few days ago.
I had an appointment and at the front desk the clerk asked me wether I came there by car (do I need a parking permit) to which I said no even though I did but I left it further away so that I don’t need said permit. Funnily enough the person I came to meet then asked me the same thing to which I sad “Yeah, but I left it further away” and I’m quite sure the clerk heard me so… …yeah. That’s why I don’t lie.
The previous lie before that when a beggar came asking wether I had any cash to which I said no even though I did. Again a completely pointless lie.
I dated a 5 year younger woman in my twenties for 5 years and while the age gap itself wasn’t an issue to us or anyone else, what turned out to be an issue, was that she changed quite dramatically during those 5 years and we ended up growing apart. That’s a feature of a young age though, not the age difference.

It’s not an upgrade in every way. No Hi-Fi DAC, no optical image stabilizer and no IR blaster but all in all I’ve been quite satisfied with this one. By far the best feeling phone in hand without a case too. You also gain back the good old notification led.
In Finland we place it in a deep tunnel dug into the bedrock where it will be put into capsules and buried in clay. The waste however is a big issue, there’s no denying that.
At least 20 coal-fired power plants nationwide are being resurrected or extended past their closing dates to ensure Germany has enough energy to get through the winter.
While this all isn’t necessarily directly linked to the phasing out of nuclear energy and is more related to the war in Ukraine it still shows that Germany is continuing to use coal plants it didn’t intend to anymore.

We don’t choose to build it more expensive than it needs to be. It’s by nature always going to be more expensive to build one of something instead of what the cost per unit is going to be when you make many.
Wind and solar isn’t going to solve the issue untill we come up with a way to store energy on large scale. When you plug in an appliance that electricity is not taken from a reserve but it’s produced for you in real time. Wind doesn’t blow and sun doesn’t shine according to how much electricity is needed at each moment. Finland produces all its electricity basically by hydro, wind and nuclear power. When it’s windy we have excess electricity and the prices drops to negative and we got to sell it abroad but when it’s calm the opposite is true. This wouldn’t be the case if we could somehow store that excess energy.
They’re burning coal to produce the energy they otherwise would have done using nuclear so I don’t think there’s anything wrong about what I said. If you turn off a nuclear power plant you’re going to need to produce that energy by some other means. They’re not building new coal plants to replace nuclear but they’re continuing to use/reopen coal plants that shouldn’t have to be used anymore. Germany is the world’s 4th biggest coal consumer.
The high cost is largely explained by the fact that there’s no “standard model” for nuclear power plants but instead they’re all designed and built from scratch which can make them really expensive. Olkiluoto 3 nuclear power plant in Finland is the world’s 8th most expensive building at whopping 12 billion dollar cost to build. The original price estimate was 3 billion. Many of the buildings on that list ahead of Olkiluoto 3 are also nuclear power plants.
This however isn’t some inherent probem about nuclear power itself but rather the way we do it. It doesn’t need to be that expensive.
Out of necessity probably. In Germany for example they’re turning off nuclear power plants and replacing them with coal because nuclear is dangerous apparently. However you still need to produce the power somehow to run the country. Not even the most hardcore climate activists want to sit in a dark, cold apartment with no power.
Probably somewhere around the age of 14 when most of my friends started doing “adult stuff” and I still prefered the things I had been doing up untill that point and now at over 30 I still prefer that over adulting.
I don’t know if I’m actually that different from other people but I sure do feel like it. I’m quite independent. I like solitude and I tend to form my own opinions on stuff instead of adopting what people around me think.
I’m probably on the autistic spectrum somewhere and I don’t think of myself as very nice person. I mean I don’t treat people badly ever but I’m not much of a people pleaser either and can be quite blunt from time to time. Surprisingly many people still seem to like me so I don’t know what’s wrong with them.
I love doing what I’m doing right now: waking up early and just taking 3 hours or so to enjoy a couple of cups of coffee while browsing the internet with no hurry to be anywhere.
I almost never plan anything ahead. I think it’s due to my undiagnosed ADD, but I’m really the happiest when I have an open schedule and can do whatever I want whenever the motivation strikes. One day, I might just sit and browse Lemmy or watch YouTube the whole morning, and another day I’m in my shed organizing screws for 8 hours straight without eating, drinking, or going to the toilet.
Then, of course, there are the usual activities: long walks, mountain biking, cooking by a campfire, and the occasional trip with my family’s boat, etc. I’m basically the most boring person you’ll meet. I no longer even feel FOMO when I hear about other people’s trips abroad during their vacations. Good for you, but I have zero interest in that.
Back in the days only people with a strong will to survive did, infact, survive and the genes from those people are in all of us. Many like to pretend they don’t posses these features but that’s only because you’re living a modern comfortable life, so you never need to rely on it. Especially compared to what it would’ve been 10k years ago.
You can take any modern man, and put him along with his family in a house and place an angry stranger pounding at the door shouting threats at his wife and kids and you’ll soon discover the violence you just thought wasn’t there.
